The People We Serve: Finding Purpose, Connection, and Community: Steven's Story

At AtWork!, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to be engaged in their community, build meaningful relationships, and contribute in ways that bring them joy and fulfillment. That’s exactly what Steven has been doing through our Community Inclusion (CI) program in Spokane!

For over a year and a half, Steven has been a dedicated volunteer at a Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels congregate site, where he helps serve meals and brighten the day of every person who walks through the door. He’s not just a volunteer—he’s a friend, a familiar face, and a part of the community. He greets each guest by name, shares in conversation, and creates a warm, welcoming environment for everyone.

But Steven’s passion for connection doesn’t stop there. He’s also part of a walking group, where he and his peers enjoy getting active together, whether outside in the fresh air or inside when the weather doesn’t cooperate. The friendships he’s built in this group are a testament to the power of inclusion and the importance of belonging.

And he’s not slowing down! Steven is currently working toward another exciting opportunity—volunteering at an animal shelter. His journey shows how meaningful engagement can open doors, build confidence, and help individuals thrive.

Steven’s experience is just one example of the many individuals benefiting from Community Inclusion programs. Studies show that people with disabilities who engage in social and volunteer activities experience improved well-being, stronger social networks, and increased confidence. By providing opportunities like these, communities become more inclusive, diverse, and vibrant for everyone.
